Focus Healthcare Experience: Public Medical System

Company: A public medical system consisting of three hospitals, two long-term care facilities, an HMO, eight primary care centers and an ambulatory delivery service seeing over 500,000 patients per year

Situation: The hospital had been consistently losing money annually.

Focus Scope: At the request of the hospital, a Focus professional undertook a full review of its financial and operational functions.

Tasks Performed: As a result of this analysis, the Focus Professional developed and implemented a Total Performance Improvement Program, a Customer Service Re-engineering Process and a Management Accountability Program for the entire organization with a view to strategically reorganizing the medical system to a decentralized, service-Focused, operational approach to delivering care.

Results: Staffing was reduced by over 1400 FTE's within two years. Within one year, net revenue was increased by $6.5MM with expense reductions of $14.5MM. With the help of the Focus professional, the hospital had an improved community and physician perception, increased private pay utilization and a significantly-enhanced financial performance.
